R.I.P. Michael Jackson
Ok to be honest I never claimed to be his biggest fan. But even I must admit that he was a real great musician and songwriter.
So in memory of his death

Intel Leibniz Challenge 2010… all the young Nerds
Unbelievable how Capacitors, Resistors, Microcontrollers and some cables attract thousands of nerdy teenagers to a 4 months long tough competition in the area of math and computer science.
The Intel Leibniz Challenge now in its fourth year had nearly 3500 participating students from all over Germany and from some German schools in Poland, Brasil, Mexico, New Zealand and the US.
The challenge is tough but rewarding.
The winners were awarded with internships at the R&D facility Intel Braunschweig,
grants from Leibniz University of Hanover and hardware prizes with a value of more than 20.000 Euro.
And last but not least the competing teams learned a lot about what it means to be an engineer. Nearly 20 percent of the students that participated this year participated at least once before.
And according to the applause given when the organizers announced the Intel Leibniz Challenge for next year
many students will be competing again at the Intel Leibniz Challenge 2011.
Will you compete too?
For more info about this Nerd Challenge please visit the Intel Newsroom and the Intel Leibniz Challenge Website.
Intel at Waterloo
This year, on the yearly re-enactment of the battle of Waterloo (in Belgium), Intel had a little surprise for the visitors. On the public area, we set up 4 Intel Core i7 systems to play Napoleon Total War, a PC game from SEGA/Creative Assembly, that came out earlier this year. A game officially approved as ‘cool’ by Nerd-FM.
Ha, we figured, no better location to play a ‘virtual’ battle on a brand new PC than on a ‘real’ battle field, especially as on this re-enactment edition over 3000 re-enactors participated.
Nerds make it happen. Always!
It’s alright
I got it on good authority – there is no reason for concern regarding the unchecked use of heavy weaponry by visitors of theRPC 2010.
This lady from our Lord Emperors Inquistion - as friendly as professional – is a prime example: These guys here know their stuff, and earth – or at least Cologne – could be invaded by pretty much anything and everything: We have the people, the guns and the swords to fight off pretty much everything – all in a freak’s days work, looking good and… elfy (?) in the meantime.
Stay calm citizens
There is no need to panic. I can’t stop the urge to check my surroundings all the time though – there is barely any need for serious research when the first rock-solid fact turns up by itself: EVERY SINGLE FREAK is heavily armed. There are more weapons here than at a NATO depot – and at a time where armies worldwide are eagerly looking forward to the first ship-sized Gauss Guns, the freaks here gear up for some serious melee.
Clubs, spears, maces, halberds, daggers, swords, pikes, beer mugs, rolling pins and table legs, you name it, they swing it.
Some neatly arranged table legs there. Hope they got permits. I have no idea what they are preparing for, but the average freak knows something we don’t. Better keep on your toes.
and the symptoms are spreading. Sooner or later, you have to take part in the arms race. Just look at him; all cute and innocent now, but at the end of the second day here at RPC, he might be a spine-sword wielding maniac.
First results
We were able to get some top data on freaks – there was a costume contest on the Roccat stage.
First off, it was obvious that every one here takes this pretty seriously – there went a lot of time and love in these costumes, and the display is impressive. At the same time, it can be pretty unsettling for the unprepared nerd.
If you’re asking yourself: “Is that an Alien performing a dance routine?”, why, yes it is. If not, good for you
Oh alright, it was fun to watch – and make no mistake, these costumes can be very convincing.
me like costume.
In the end, orks proved to be unstoppable. To be honest, i wasn’t aware that green-skinned monsters might have any interest in EIZO monitors, but congratulations to our fanged, grunting, slobbering winners.
Positive side effects
It is a little known fact that the destruction of the second death star left the remaining armed forces of the empire in shambles. The job market couldn’t take the whole military apparatus of a galaxy – spanning evil empire. Numbers of unemployed, homeless and destitute Storm Troopers and TIE – fighter pilots soared. Thanks to conventions like the RPC, they found a new purpose in life and are off the streets – creating a better, safer convention for all of us.
Great costumes!
Nerdout at RPC 2010
RPC 2010 started today at 10:00 am – hope you got your tickets!
Follow us in our daring scientific endeavour – we plunge right into the crowd to find out what seperates the nerd from the freak – if there is any difference at all?
